Si bien sûr le nom de Led Zeppelin vient immédiatement à l'esprit lorsque l'on évoque Robert Plant, on a souvent tendance à oublier que la carrière du Dirigeable n'a duré « que » 11 années, tandis que le travail solo de son chanteur a débuté il y a maintenant 38 ans. En marge des excès tapageurs du rock'n'roll de sa jeunesse, Plant est toujours resté un artiste discret et concentré sur son œuvre, presque un artisan. Amoureux de(s) musique(s), il est au fil des albums et de ses envies parti dans des directions souvent très différentes. La compilation Digging Deep : Subterranea propose un retour en son sur l'intégralité de son travail en solo depuis l'initiatique Pictures At Eleven de 1982 jusqu'à nos jours, excluant ses escapades collaboratives comme The Honeydrippers et à plus forte raison Page And Plant. La diversité bien réelle du propos est encore renforcée par l'absence totale de chronologie dans la présentation des titres. Seul fil rouge de ces trente compos : la signature vocale unique de Plant et un goût certain pour les arrangements soignés.
