Cinq années sans nouvelles, comme une petite disparition, ce qui reste, en ce qui concerne Emmylou Harris, proprement inconcevable. Treize années depuis la mutation amorcée dans l’album « Wrecking Ball » (produit par Daniel Lanois), et ce choix de ne plus se tenir stricto sensu à l’idiome country qui a nourri l’essentiel de la carrière de la chanteuse, mais de s’ouvrir, guidée par son inspiration, à d’autres plaisirs de compositions.
Quarante années depuis les débuts discographiques de celle qui reste avec son presque contemporain Neil Young (simplement de deux ans son aîné) l’une des artistes les plus originales de sa génération. Soixante années pour célébrer l’anniversaire de la fille de l’Alabama. All I Intended To Be est sans doute tout cela, mais certainement pas un amer coup d’œil dans le rétroviseur.
Accompagnée de la géante Dolly Parton, des sœurs Kate et Anna Mc Garrigle, du revenant Vince Gill (star de la country de la précédente décennie, et ancien membre de Pure Prairie League), du claviériste Glenn D. Hardin (il fut accompagnateur d’Elvis Presley), et retrouvant le producteur Brian Ahern (avec qui elle a travaillé sur près de quinze albums auparavant), elle visite dans une claire optique country des chansons de Merle Haggard ou de Billy Joe Shaver, et compose des mélodies conjuguant passion et absence de prétention.
Car dans ces treize chansons riches d’introspection, la chanteuse ne sombre jamais dans le nombrilisme. Mais, surtout, Emmylou Harris chante, de cette voix merveilleuse, immédiatement identifiable, et pas une seconde altérée par la douce patine du temps. Cela n’en rend son retour –celui d’une artiste émérite - que plus précieux. All I Intented to Be : beau titre (« Tout ce que j’ai essayé d’être »), et beau disque.
