Avec les impeccables Same Trailer Different Park (2013) et Pageant Material (2015), Kacey Musgraves est devenue l’une des voix les plus intéressantes de Nashville. Evitant de tomber dans les pièges tendus par Music City en devenant une 5473e Taylor Swift (période country pop) insipide, incolore et inodore, la jeune Texane a su imposer son style contemporain avec une petite touche old school nécessaire. Musgraves boucle l’année 2016 par un exercice dont les Américains sont très friands : le Christmas album. Une épreuve qu’elle passe haut la main en proposant une palette stylistique large, des invités triés sur le volet (le pape de la country himself Willie Nelson, le soul brother qui monte, qui monte, qui monte, Leon Bridges et les Quebe Sisters, expertes du western swing) et, à l’arrivée, un album douillet comme une couette en plumes d’oie. A Very Kacey Christmas alterne surtout parfaitement bien entre séquences volontairement rétro et juste kitsch comme il faut (I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas) et chansons country soul modernes (Present Without A Bow en duo avec Leon Bridges).
