Tedd Joselson
A protege of Clifford Curzon and Vladimir Horowitz, pianist Tedd Joselson made his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1974, before reaching adulthood. He has specialized in Romantic virtuoso repertory, especially Russian, but also often plays Beethoven and other Viennese composers.
Joselson was born in Antwerp, Belgium, the home country of his mother, on October 4, 1954; his father was American. Both parents were enthusiastic concertgoers, and Joselson began accompanying them as early as age two, hearing the pianists of the golden age, including Horowitz. Joselson attended the Juilliard School in New York, studying with Adele Marcus. He also had lessons from Horowitz and Curzon. As his classmates were preparing for a years-long grind of piano competitions, Joselson auditioned for Philadelphia Orchestra conductor Eugene Ormandy in 1973 and was told to go ahead and pick whatever repertory he wanted to play, and the orchestra would accompany him. Joselson made his debut in Philadelphia the following year, but it wasn't easy; he was terrified and stepped out of the Academy of Music concert hall. Ormandy saw him outside, walked him back into the hall, and adjusted Joselson's tie. He asked the pianist to turn around so that he could adjust the back of his jacket but instead pushed Joselson out onto the stage. Joselson recalled feeling that he was going to die, but he pushed through and found himself enjoying the performance by its end.
That led to further engagements in Philadelphia and with other major orchestras in the U.S. and abroad. In 1976, he was signed to the RCA Red Seal label and released a series of LPs, several of which earned Grammy nominations. Joselson became well known as a concerto soloist but was also familiar from his annual recital tours, which he began after making his debut at the Great Performers series at New York's Lincoln Center in 1975. He retired in 1999 but returned to performing in the 2010s. He was signed to the Signum Classics label and released a pair of new albums in 2021, one of Manu Martin's Lim Fantasy of Companionship for piano and orchestra, with the London Symphony Orchestra, and the other entitled Tedd Joselson's Companionship of Concertos, featuring works by Grieg and Rachmaninov, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. His complete LP recordings on RCA were reissued on compact disc.
