Né à Bern en 1960, c’est par le post-punk que la carrière de Stephan Eicher a commencé, avec le projet Grauzone qui a connu le succès au début des années 80 avec le single "Eisbär. Mais le compositeur-interprète suisse s’ouvre rapidement à d’autres horizons et se tourne vers la langue française qu’il choisira avec l’anglais pour son premier album « Les Chansons Bleues ». Il entame alors une carrière Pop/Rock où la langue de Molière va progressivement prendre le dessus sur celle de Shakespeare, notamment à travers ses collaborations avec l’écrivain Philippe Djian, qui donnera naissance à plusieurs tubes marquants dont l’incontournable « Déjeuner en paix ». Si sa musique a elle aussi pris des couleurs plus proche de la chanson, il n’hésite pas à mélanger ses trois langues, sur « Eldorado » sorti en 2007, ou le temps d’un duo avec Sophie Hunger (« Spiegelbild »), ni à se réinventer à chaque album, en explorant par exemple le rock balkanique inspiré de ses origines avec la jeune fanfare de Berne Traktorkestar sur « Hüh! » (2019).
