Les vingt premières années de carrière de Johnny Hallyday furent, à l’image de toute sa carrière, particulièrement prolifiques, avec 25 albums sortis entre 1961 et 1979. Au débuts des années 60, il fut le premier à populariser le rock 'n' roll dans l'hexagone, reprenant en version française les standards américains de l’époque et devint rapidement « l’idole des jeunes ». En 1965 il se produit à l’Olympia pendant plus d’un mois, puis évolue ensuite vers le rhythm and blues et un rock beaucoup plus vif et contestataire à partir de « Rivière ouvre ton lit » en 1969. Il continuer à mêler ballades, country et rock 'n' roll jusqu’au milieu des années 70, avant de se lancer dans un étonnant opéra rock, « Hamlet » en 1976 qui marque le début d’un virage artistique ou la variété prendra progressivement de plus en plus de place dans son répertoire, sans délaisser pour autant toute la musique qu’il aime… qui vient du blues !
