La Compagnia del Madrigale
La Compagnia del Madrigale is the most accredited madrigal ensemble of today’s international early music scene. The group was founded in 2008 on the initiative of Rossana Bertini, Giuseppe Maletto and Daniele Carnovich: after singing madrigals and sacred polyphony together for over 20 years, they decide to self-manage their own activity without a musical director and integrate into the group Francesca Cassinari, Elena Carzaniga, Raffaele Giordani e Marco Scavazza.
In 2009, in collaboration with the RSI (Radio Television of the Italian Switzerland), under the direction of Diego Fasolis, and with I Barocchisti, La Compagnia del Madrigale recorded the Amfiparnaso by Orazio Vecchi and the Secondo Libro dei Madrigali a quattro voci of Palestrina, as part of the Palestrina complete works recording project, with the musical consultation of Francesco Luisi.
In spring 2011 the ensemble made its discographic debut for the label Arcana with an anthology of madrigals on texts of Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso. This programme has been performed at the prestigious festivals of Ravenna, Utrecht, Pisa and Paris. In 2013 La Compagnia del Madrigale started working with the Spanish label Glossa, and recorded the Sesto libro dei Madrigali a cinque voci by Carlo Gesualdo, on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of his death. The disc obtained the Choc of Classica and the Diapason d’Or de l’Année 2013 for the Early Music category.
Afterwards, the Primo Libro de’ Madrigali a cinque voci by Luca Marenzio was released and received the Diapason d’Or. For this recording the ensemble has been rewarded with the prestigious Gramophone Award 2014 for the Early Music category. The most recent release with Glossa is a triple CD dedicated to Gesualdo’s Responsoria. This new publication has already received unanimous critical acclaim: Album of the Week of The Sunday Times, Diapason d’Or and Choc of Classica.
At the same time, the ensemble has expanded its concert activity, performing at major festivals including MiTo, Unione Musicale Torino, Schwetzinger SWR Festspiele, RheinVocal, and in prestigious concert halls such as Kölner Philharmonie, Victoria Hall in Geneve, Musée d’Orsay in Paris, Pontificio Istituto di Musica Sacra in Rome. Looking ahead to 2016 La Compagnia has been invited to join the concert season at the Wigmore Hall, London. In 2012 the group was invited to the XVIII Europa Cantat in Turin, where they held a workshop on Monteverdi’s madrigal interpretation for a wide group of singers from all over the world. Future projects will see La Compagnia del Madrigale involved in the recording of spiritual works by Monteverdi and the Quinto Libro de’ Madrigali a sei voci of Luca Marenzio, as well as programmes devoted to Petrarca’s Canzoniere, Gerusalemme Liberata of Tasso and the Vespro della Beata Vergine of Monteverdi.
