Alice Cooper, le groupe, est mort : vive Alice Cooper, le chanteur ! Après sept albums (dont quatre classiques), d’innombrables tournées et autant de succès, Vincent-Alice se retrouve seul. Pour son premier disque en solo, un concept-album qui sera suivi d’une tournée du même nom très théâtrale (bienvenue dans mon cauchemar), il fait de nouveau appel à Bob Ezrin. Le producteur convoque alors son équipe habituelle, emmenée par les guitaristes virtuoses Dick Wagner et Steve Hunter (les mêmes qu’il convie sur toutes ses productions, de Lou Reed à Peter Gabriel). Le son change drastiquement, gagnant en précision ce qu’il perd en spontanéité. Tout est ici beaucoup plus léché, même les titres rock (« The Black Widow ») et ce n’est pas un hasard si c’est une ballade sirupeuse, « Only Women Bleed », qui obtient le succès en single. La page est tournée, une époque est révolue. Le succès est encore au rendez-vous (n°5 au classement du Billboard), mais on sent que l’affaire va bientôt mal tourner…
