Si l'acteur Jamie Foxx a pu faire ses preuves sur grand écran en se glissant dans la peau de son idole Ray Charles, ce qui lui valut un Oscar en 2005, il n'en était pas de même du chanteur dont le premier essai Peep This publié en 1994 sur son propre label Fox est resté à l'état d'anecdote.
Dix ans après, et fort d'une notoriété internationale récemment acquise, le crooner texan revient avec d'importants moyens sur J Records (label du vénérable Clive Davis) et les bras chargés de chansons d'obédience soul et R&B concoctées avec la crème du rap. Sur la lancée de « Slow Jamz » , succès signé Twista et Kanye West, Jamie Foxx endosse le costume lamé de serial soul lover pour une démonstration en seize mid-tempos qu'il gère d'une voix suave et assurée.
Le moins qu'on puisse dire est que le chanteur qui aime à s'entourer n'y va pas avec le dos de la cuillère puisqu'il convoque des stars nommées Ludacris ( « Unpredictable » ), Snoop Dogg ( « With You » ), Kanye West ( « Extravaganza » ), Twista ( « DJ Play A Love Song » ), Common ( « U Still Got It » ) et même Mary J. Blige ( « Love Changes » ) dont l'album The Breakthrough fait les frais en se faisant déloger par celui-ci à la tête du Billboard.
Si le disque ne réserve pas de grande surprise, son succès va au-delà des espérances en se vendant à près de deux millions d'exemplaires (double disque de platine). Jamie Scott devient ainsi le quatrième artiste à obtenir un Oscar et un n°1 au Billboard après Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby et Barbra Streisand.
