Pudiquement, un « différend musical » entre le leader Tom Smith et son lieutenant-guitariste Chris Urbanowicz laissait Editors dans la panade après le départ de ce dernier au printemps 2012. Un nouveau défi se présentait alors au groupe britannique dont le dernier album en date, In This Light and On This Evening n'avait pas convaincu grand monde avec son avalanche de synthétiseurs propre à faire déguerpir le pilier et sa six-cordes incisive.
C'est donc du côté de Nashville qu'est parti se ressourcer le quintette renouvelé par les arrivées de Jim Lockey et Elliott Williams, deux guitaristes pour un seul poste. Enregistré avec Jacquire King, producteur notoire de Kings of Leon, le très attendu et décisif The Weight of Your Love voit Editors revenir au son tranchant des débuts mais avec une puissance redoublée sur le simple « A Ton of Love » qui se mesure au U2 des stades par son refrain hymnique. Il en est de même pour le menaçant « The Weight » qui peine à décoller, « Sugar » gratifié d'un chant d'outre-tombe et « Formaldehyde » qui sauront séduire un public plus large que celui des nostalgiques de Joy Division ou Echo & the Bunnymen. Pour sa part, « Formaldehyde », sans autre relief qu'un choeur d'anges, ramène la formation de Birmingham à ses racines.
La tension qui portait le début de l'album s'évanouit d'un coup avec « What Is This Thing Called Love », slow serti de cordes, piano acoustique et synthétiseurs. Une chute tragique dont le groupe ne se remettra pas, prolongée par la déliquescente ballade « Honesty » et l'incurable « Nothing ». À trop vouloir ouvrir le coeur battant derrière ses guitares et se rapprocher des étoiles, Editors perd ce qui lui restait de mordant et de ce qui a fait son identité. Il est alors permis de qualifier The Weight of Your Love d'album « américain », préparé pour séduire large, remplir les tribunes et élargir le cercle d'admirateurs aux familles entières. Un crève-coeur pour tout fan de la première heure qui se consolera maigrement avec « Hyena » et « Two Hearted Spider » tandis que Tom Smith récite déjà le bottin sur « The Phone Book ». Le succès n'attend que lui.
