The piano proves to be an integral motivic force behind the pent-up emotion in the movie The Piano. The protagonist in the soundtrack, and in the movie, is Ada, a Scottish deaf-mute sent to the wilderness of 19th century New Zealand for an arranged marriage. The melodies that seem to flow from Ada's fingers themselves are Nyman's interpretations of Scottish folk and popular songs. The sound of the piano reflects her character, her mood, her expressions, and her unspoken dialogue. [The 2004 reissue includes the bonus track "The Heart Asks Pleasure First/The Promise."]
