Ce « grand jour » qu’affiche Chance The Rapper jusque dans le titre de son premier véritable album ne célèbre en réalité pas cet événement très attendu de la planète rap, mais… le jour du mariage de l’artiste chicagoan. C’est en effet « le plus beau jour de sa vie » que ce dernier a choisi de mettre en musique à l’occasion de cet effort discographique si longtemps espéré. Première surprise, The Big Day est un album très hétéroclite, balayant des univers musicaux très différents, au contraire des mixtapes jusque-là publiées par le rappeur, dont l’excellente Coloring Book qui avait remporté en 2017 le Grammy Award du meilleur… album rap de l’année. Mais pour servir cette œuvre longue de presque 1h20 et riche de 22 titres, Chance The Rapper offre à ses fans une seconde surprise de taille avec un casting d’invités XXL, garantissant fraîcheur et éclectisme. De John Legend à Death Cab For Cutie, en passant par CocoRosie, Nicki Minaj, Shawn Mendes, Gucci Mane ou, plus surprenant, Randy Newman, tous ont répondu à l’invitation du rappeur, sans oublier de nombreux autres. Seule exception notable, celle de Kanye West, l’un des mentors de l’artiste, absent d’une tracklist à la versatilité enthousiasmante. Pour le moins original, pour ne pas dire déconcertant par endroits, The Big Day est donc un authentique album-concept, intimiste par moments, mais jamais larmoyant, faisant au contraire toujours la part belle à la bonne humeur. S’il s’étale peut-être un peu trop en longueur, il recèle quand même de fabuleux titres, comme le très efficace « Big Fish », produit au talent par Timbaland et enregistrant la participation convaincante de Gucci Mane. Les amateurs de rap US ne se contenteront pas de ce morceau de bravoure, et s’enthousiasmeront sans aucun doute pour les deux titres faisant appel à Nicki Minaj, « Slide Around » et « Zanies and Fools ». Mélangeant avec une facilité déconcertante les genres funk, jazz ou hip-hop, « Eternal » est une autre preuve du potentiel illimité de Chance The Rapper, tout comme le très spirituel « We Go High », avec ses inflexions gospel savoureuses.
