Les années 70 furent pour le jazz une décennie de fusions à gogo. A l’image d’Oregon qui mêlait le genre à des sonorités venues des quatre coins du monde (on ne parlait pas encore de world music) mais aussi à quelques influences classiques. Lorsque parait Roots In The Sky en 1979 sur le label Elektra, la formation de Ralph Towner, Colin Walcott, Glen Moore et Paul McCandless a déjà une solide base de fans. Des aficionados envoûtés par ce singulier alliage stylistique. Cette musique tantôt chambriste, tantôt quasi-ethnique, surprend à chaque instant, aidée par la grande virtuosité de ses instrumentistes et l’originalité de leurs improvisations. Cinq ans après la sortie Roots In The Sky, Walcott meurt dans un accident de voiture lors d’une tournée allemande d’Oregon. © MD/Qobuz
