Le 5 juillet 1958, Ray Charles occupe la scène du Festival de Jazz de Newport. Il bouscule la tradition, offrant au public passablement éberlué de somptueuses et éruptives versions de « I Got A Woman » (plus de six minutes de délire orgiaque), de « Talkin’ About You » et de « The Night Time Is The Right Time ».
Le choix de certaines pièces plus aptes à séduire un public de jazz (dont le « Blues Waltz » de Max Roach, ou un « Sherry » signé Crawford) ne jugule pas le caractère particulièrement électrique de l’homme de scène qu’il est alors devenu. Il est accompagné dans cette croisade de la danse par, entre autres, David « Fathead » Newman au saxophone ténor, le trompettiste Marcus Belgrave et Hank Crawford au saxophone alto. Sorti en single, « The Night Time Is The Right Time » atteindra une très confortable cinquième place des hit-parades Rhythm ‘n’ Blues.
