Le premier album de Stone Temple Pilots, Core (1992) avait très vite trouvé son public à défaut de convaincre les critiques restant dubitatifs face à l'irruption du quatuor après les grosses chaleurs du grunge.
Ce second opus concocté par la bande à Scott Weiland se charge de remettre les pendules à l'heure et de mettre tout le monde d'accord, par la grâce de trois titres aussi différents que « Vasoline », « Interstate Love Song » et « Big Empty », trois succès majeurs du groupe. Purple (couleur préférée du leader qui précise qu'elle est celle des « hématomes »), est à la fois l'album classique et la porte d'entrée idéale de Stone Temple Pilots alors à l'apogée de sa popularité.
Loin d'être une formation grunge typique, STP tire son originalité du brassage d'influences hard rock, power pop, psychédélique (« Pretty Penny ») et country. Il est ici en pleine possession de son inspiration mélodique et rythmique comme peu de prétendants à la même époque. Un groupe de rock des stades qui rassemble public et critique n'est pas si fréquent pour être signalé.
Purple, n°1 dès sa sortie et pendant trois semaines, sera sacré six fois disque de platine dans son pays.
