This small group swing album goes back to a live session recorded on a home tape recorder in 1936. Almost no information is known about this session except that, in addition to a 27 year-old Lester Young, it features Count Basie on piano and other members of the Basie Band.

While the recording quality here is poor, the performances themselves are stellar, more than making up for the primitive sound. Pres and his group really swing on these tracks. The roots of bebop are present in these tunes, as well as the energy that made this style of music such a vital part of popular culture. The audience's enthusiasm alone makes this music that much more vibrant. Relaxed yet fiery versions of "Lester Leaps In," "Destination Moon," and "Sunday" are highlights here. Finally, the unknown trumpeter on this recording is simply wonderful on all six tunes.
