Ja Rule se pose clairement en successeur du regretté 2Pac, dont il copie jusqu'à l'apparence. Produit et dirigé par son envahissant mentor, Irv Gotti, Ja Rule s'adonne à un gangsta rap diablement efficace.
Pain Is Love est un très bon album de gangsta rap, l'atmosphère de violence est parfaite, la voix de Ja Rule est voilée de trop de cognac et de fumées illicites, les bruitages traduisent un climat de guerre.
Les deux tubes « I'm Real (Murder remix) » et « Always On Time » sont imparables, les voix de Jennifer Lopez et Ashanti viennent adoucir le propos de deux titres par ailleurs nettement plus calmes que le reste de l'album.
Dans Pain Is Love l'équilibre entre rap violent et titres plus grand public est parfait, presque trop parfait à vrai dire.
