Avec cette boîte métallique, le mur du son guitaristique des Sex Pistols semble bien loin… Johnny Rotten redevenu John Lydon invente ici la longue et douloureuse BO tendue comme un string d'une new wave martiale au groove étonnamment glacial. Contrôlé par la basse de Jah Wobble et lacéré par les riffs de guitare de Keith Levene, ce deuxième opus révolutionnaire de Public Image Limited invente le dub postpunk, le funk froid et le rock (f)rigide. L’ex-Pistol braille comme un muezzin habité et trépane davantage les oreilles que du temps de Never Mind the Bollocks. Publié à sa sortie sous la forme de trois maxis enfermés dans une véritable boîte métallique de bobines de films, Metal Box marche dans les traces du krautrock teuton de Neu et Can, et s’avère surtout le disque précurseur d’un punk-funk qu’on entendra encore résonner bien des années plus tard… © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
