The revival of music by women took a while to discover that of Mélanie ("Mel") Bonis, who took her nickname specifically because it was gender neutral. The situation has begun to change, although many of Bonis' larger works remain unrecorded; perhaps a film about the composer's eminently cinema-ready life would really kick things into gear. For the present, Bonis wrote a good deal of music for flute and piano, and the high opus numbers of this highly salon-ready genre testify to its success in its own time. One is struck by how Bonis, like Saint-Saëns, retained her melodic facility into later life. Saint-Saëns is one influence on Bonis; Franck, audible in the density of the piano part handled smoothly here by Eliana Grasso, is another. Veteran flutist Mario Ancillotti gives just the right elegance and flair to these works, of which the highlight is probably the opening Flute Sonata, Op. 64, the only one that already had any kind of a presence in the repertory. However, also consider the new arrangements of the Trois Mélodies, Op. 91, done by Ancillotti himself; the tune of the third piece, Songe, is one for the ages. Brilliant Classics delivers excellent chamber sound this time around, from the Abbey Rocchi studios in Rome. An absolutely pleasing hour of music for those interested in music by women or the French turn-of-the-century scene.
