Deux ans après Girl at the End of the World, le groupe mythique de Manchester semble ne pas avoir pris une ride avec Living in Extraordinary Times. A la simple évocation de ce nom de James, c’est toute une époque qui renaît et un beau tableau de chasse qui pointe le bout de son nez : quinze albums, un son britpop typique de cette Angleterre du début des années 90 et surtout des tubes mémorables tels Come Home, Sit Down, She’s a Star ou encore Laid… En 2001, le départ du leader Tim Booth marquait la fin de cette aventure débutée en 1982. Mais pour tous les fans, la reformation en 2007 déclencha deux réactions bien distinctes. D’une part, l’euphorie. De l’autre, l’angoisse de se retrouver avec des papis sur scène. Eh bien non. James carbure tout aussi bien qu’à ses débuts comme le prouve Living in Extraordinary Times. Jamais trop timide, James ouvre avec Hank un titre sur lequel résonnent des tambours tribaux et décrit tout ce qui ne va pas avec l’Amérique moderne. Un, deux, trois : Trump-lapidation !

Mais Booth ne donne pas uniquement dans le lynchage. Sensible et honnête, il se dévoile dans une déclaration d’amour paternelle avec Coming Home part 2, une suite spirituelle de l’énorme succès Come Home. S’ouvrant sur un beat électronique, il explique la difficulté de vivre loin de ses proches, de manquer des évènements importants dans la vie d’un père. Une lettre d’amour qui émeut davantage avec le clip simple et authentique de Leif Tilden… James a toujours su composer des hits radio de qualité qui trottent dans la tête. Un battement acoustique et des cuivres suivis d’un motif électro au synthé, Many Faces entraîne dans un état de transe. Un crescendo parfait qui révèle des chœurs divins et transporte dans un au-delà.
