Repéré par Renaud, dont il avait assuré la première partie à de multiples reprises, Gauvain Sers avait concrétisé son début de notoriété grâce à l'album Pourvu en 2017. Après avoir sillonné la France, cette fois-ci en tant que tête d’affiche, le chanteur creusois revient avec Les Oubliés, s’appuyant sur son verbe poétique et son envie touchante d’aborder des thèmes difficiles, comme la désertification des campagnes (« Les Oubliés »), l’égalité des chances (« L’Etudiante ») ou encore le sort des réfugiés (« Au pays des Lumières »). Une douce mélancolie subsiste tout au long des 14 pistes de cet album souvent touchant, comme sur « L’Epaule d’un copain », non sans rappeler « La Chanson de Pierrot » de son mentor Renaud, ou encore le magnifique « Excuse-moi mon amour », serti de cordes majestueuses et d’un piano.
Il en faut finalement peu à Gauvain Sers pour susciter l’émotion, et les morceaux bénéficiant d’arrangements plus fournis, avec section rythmique à tempo moyen et petit gimmick de circonstance, qu’il soit à l’accordéon (« La Boîte à chaussures ») au clavier ou à la guitare, ont une fâcheuse tendance à alourdir quelque peu le propos et à banaliser les textes pourtant ciselés. Gauvain Sers étant un chanteur « à texte », le seul gros reproche qui pourrait être fait à Les Oubliés concerne donc sa direction artistique : la batterie, présente sur de nombreux titres, n’apporte rien à des chansons ne réclamant souvent qu’intimité et douceur. Difficile ainsi après quelques écoutes de ne pas remarquer les similitudes entre certains morceaux, comme « Ton jean bleu » et « Au pays des Lumières », toutes deux bâties sur la même structure : roulement de caisse claire et gimmick introductifs et tempo qui déroule à 98 BPM.
Heureusement, la nostalgie de l’enfance et de la jeunesse en général, les souvenirs et l’émotion retranscrits à grand renfort d’images sont largement majoritaires tout au long de l’album, dont les arrangements de cordes sont systématiquement somptueux. Il reste de vrais beaux moments, comme « Tu sais mon grand » ou le partage de « Y’a pas de retraite pour les artistes » avec Anne Sylvestre.
