LE CINEMA is a fun compilation by the immensely talented violinist, Gidon Kremer. Kremer has taken movie music that he found particularly effective and presented it on a single album. Some of the music is familiar and some is obscure, but all of it is well played and recorded. This CD may send you running to your video store to find some of these old movies! The most substantial work presented is the "Cinema-Fantasie" of Darius Milhaud. Milhaud uses fragments and motifs from different Brazilian popular songs in a rondo-like structure. Kremer plays with playfulness and wit, and even a bit of irreverence, which fits the music perfectly.
Included are extensive notes which often include statements by Kremer and the composer about the particular selections. Unfortunately, the different translations are mixed together in the book, which makes a bit of confusion, but the playing is all charm.
