Theodora affirme l'émergence de l'opéra anglais fondé sur des épisodes bibliques. Ce magnifique oratorio de Haendel relate le destin tragique de la Princesse d'Antioche, devenue chrétienne, et qui résiste à l'autorité de Rome. Eprise du centurion Didymus lui aussi converti au christianisme, elle périra aux côtés de son amant dans un consentement commun, tous deux refusant d'abjurer leur foi.

Chronique

Theodora affirme l'émergence de l'opéra anglais fondé sur des épisodes bibliques. Ce magnifique oratorio de Haendel relate le destin tragique de la Princesse d'Antioche, devenue chrétienne, et qui résiste à l'autorité de Rome. Eprise du centurion Didymus lui aussi converti au christianisme, elle périra aux côtés de son amant dans un consentement commun, tous deux refusant d'abjurer leur foi.

Ce nouvel enregistrement réalisé en 2021 par il pomo d'oro dirigé avec brio par le chef et claviériste Maxim Emelyanychev bénificie d'une distribution exceptionnelle : Joyce DiDonato (Irene), Lisette Oropesa (Theodora), Michael Spyres (Septimius), Paul-Antoine Bénos-Djian (Didymus), John Chest (Valens).
