These live recordings of Frank Martin's Cello Concerto and his tone poem The Four Elements date from 1970 and 1965, respectively; even though there are a few distracting audience noises, the vivid, muscular performances and the fine analog reproduction reduce them to minor annoyances. Martin is well served by Bernard Haitink and the Concertgebouw Orchestra, most sympathetically and engagingly in the Cello Concerto, where the goading exchanges between the soloist and the orchestra energize the performance to a high level. Cellist Jean Decroos is both technically precise and warmly expressive in his fully realized and impassioned solo part, and his repartee with the orchestra is involved, intense, and exciting. The Four Elements, however, is less riveting and even a bit tedious; Martin's simple conceptions of earth, water, air, and fire are translated into predictable tone-painting that quickly wears thin; and the four movements have less of the tension and urgency evident in the Concerto. One may take Martin's elemental symbolism at face value, or just ignore the program entirely and accept the work for its striking harmonies, complex interchanges, and colorful orchestration. But of the two works, the Concerto provides the best reason to hear this CD.
