Fameuse interprète de « Killing Me Softly With His Song », le tube de l'année 1973 que reprendront les Fugees en 1996, Roberta Flack fut découverte par le pianiste de jazz Les McCann dans un club de Washington, où elle venait chanter parfois, s'investissant davantage pour l'enseignement de la musique dans des écoles de quartiers défavorisés. Son premier album First Take (1969) connaîtra le succès en 1972, grâce au titre « The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face », repris par Clint Eastwood dans son film Play Misty For Me (1971).
Cette ballade folk de l'Ecossais Ewan MacColl trouve en Roberta Flack une interprète de rêve, colorant si subtilement cette belle mélodie, le titre « Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye » de Leonard Cohen se voyant traité avec la même délicatesse. Avec elles rivalisent « Our Ages or Our Hearts », « I Told Jesus » et « Ballad of the Sad Young Men », tandis que « Compared to What » et « Tryin' Times » se dotent d'un swing blues qui révèle une autre facette de la chanteuse. Ce caractère prend une puissante tournure dans « Angelitos Negros » de Blanco/Maciste.
Accompagnée du bassiste Ron Carter, du batteur Ray Lucas, du guitariste John Pizzarelli et des arrangements raffinés de William Fischer, Roberta Flack, au piano, livre là un album majeur, et précurseur du style soft soul.
