Alors qu’il est encore leader du groupe de rock progressif Genesis, Phil Collins se lance une carrière solo et publie, en 1981, Face Value. Une reconversion qui se révèle rapidement être l’une des plus grandes surprises musicales de l’année et qui permet à l’artiste britannique de démarrer son ascension comme l’une des plus grandes stars des années 80. Grâce à la voix profonde et passionnée du chanteur, ses ballades pop/soul et son rock hargneux, le disque se vend encore mieux que n’importe quel opus de Genesis. Les sessions d’enregistrements au studio Town House de Londres ont visiblement grandement inspiré Collins qui, contre toute attente, expérimente de nombreuses techniques studio et laisse une grande place aux boites à rythmes alors qu’il est unanimement admiré pour ses talents de batteur. Il profite également de son indépendance pour rendre hommage à la musique noire américaine qui lui est si chère en invitant sur l’album les Phenix Horns, la prestigieuse section de cuivre des Earth, Wind & Fire.
