Pour célébrer son intronisation au Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, Sheryl Crow sort un album qu’elle définit comme une « compilation de nouvelles chansons ». « Je me suis dit que je n'allais pas faire un album conventionnel, en pensant au début, au milieu et à la fin », précise-t-elle. L’aspect quasiment impulsif de la conception de The Evolution résonne avec la teneur des chansons, catalyseurs de la colère de la chanteuse sexagénaire. Colère qui s’exprime par l’image du réveil qui sonne l’alerte dans Alarm Clock. Clairement, Sheryl Crow n’est pas du genre à vouloir être réveillée après un joli rêve. Dans Do It Again, elle dénonce les faux-semblants tout en exaltant sa force intérieure. L’album a été produit par Mike Elizondo, connu pour ses productions avec Dr. Dre, Eminem, et Nelly Furtado. « Mike a apporté une nouvelle approche et a illustré les chansons d’une manière tellement cinématographique », explique Sheryl Crow. Ce souffle cinématographique se ressent particulièrement dans le morceau Evolution, qui rappelle un peu Tomorrow Never Dies, la chanson titre de James Bond, qu’elle avait composée en 1997. Dans cette chanson, Sheryl Crow se demande comment va évoluer sa carrière, à l’heure de l’intelligence artificielle : « Turned on the radio and there it was / A song that sounded like something I wrote ».
