Patrick Bruel, alors considéré comme un chanteur pour les jeunes, revient en 2002 avec cet album que personne n'attendait.
Non que la reprise ne soit pas un genre à la mode, mais il était sacrément casse-gueule de la part de l'artiste de consacrer une galette entière à des chansons de l'entre-deux-guerres oubliées ou tombées en désuétude. Pari réussi pour cet album gentiment rétro, qui, en dépit de ses qualités et des nombreux duos assez surprenant qu'il renferme, joue un peu trop la facilité de la combo « accordéon/gapette/gouaille façon Ménilmuche ».
Si certains choix musicaux (« Ménilmontant », « Mon amant de Saint-Jean »...) étaient assez évidents à retranscrire, d'autres titres, plus méconnus sont habilement dépoussiérés par Bruel.
