En pleine déflagration punk, l’Angleterre de la fin des 70’s connaît un salvateur revival ska mené de mains de maître par Madness et surtout les Specials. Originaire de Coventry, le gang multiracial emmené par Jerry Dammers remet au goût du jour les rythmes syncopés du rocksteady jamaïcain et de son dérivé, le ska. Pork pie hats, costards noirs cintrés, motifs à damiers, la tenue de rigueur est obligatoire pour mieux apprécier, en cœur de la grise Angleterre thatchérienne, leurs singles A Message to You Rudy (une reprise de Dandy Livingstone), Too Much Too Young ou Gangsters, comme leurs deux uniques albums, Specials en 1979 et More Specials en 1980. Sous le nom de Special Aka, ils publieront en 1984 le tout aussi essentiel In the Studio With, porté au sommet des charts par le tubesque (Free) Nelson Mandela…
Au cœur de l’hiver 2019, les Specials brisent leur (très) long silence discographique avec Encore. Sauf que Jerry Dammers – auteur de leurs plus grandes chansons – et Neville Staple ne sont plus de la partie ! Terry Hall, Lynval Golding et Horace Panter sont certes bien présents mais les Specials sans Dammers, hurleront les puristes, ne seraient-ils pas… les Stones sans Keith Richards ? Avec l’aide du guitariste Steve Cradock (Ocean Colour Scene), du batteur Kenrick Rowe et du pianiste Nikolaj Torp Larsen, ces Specials 2019 ont pourtant fière allure. Leur ska croise de la soul voire du disco vintage (belle reprise du Black Skinned Blue-Eyed Boys des Equals) et n’oublie surtout pas de commenter le climat social et politique comme à leurs débuts.
