En 1967, Otis Redding est un roi de l’Olympe qui a même réussi à se faufiler sur la scène du festival pop de Monterey. De retour à Memphis, il cogite à de nouvelles orientations pour son prochain disque. La suite est aussi légendaire que tragique et le 10 décembre 1967, il meurt à seulement 26 ans dans un accident d’avion… Même si seul Otis savait à quoi devait ressembler ce “nouvel album”, Dock of the Bay Sessions tente de répondre à la question. Conçu avec Roger Armstrong du label Ace Records et Jonathan Gould, biographe du chanteur, il ne propose pas d’inédits (chaque morceau est déjà sorti sur un album posthume ou une compilation), mais un tracklisting original qui dévoile un nouvel Otis Redding. Celui qui a impressionné les foules européennes avec ses concerts atomiques et s’est créé un nouveau public aux Etats-Unis grâce à l’épisode Monterey.

On entend tout cela sur le funk dépouillé de Hard to Handle comme on sent l’influence de Bob Dylan – dont Redding adorait la musique – sur le lyrisme magnifique de Gone Again. Sa reprise du tubesque Amen des Impressions montre aussi qu’il est loin d’avoir abandonné ses racines gospel. Otis Redding n’oublie pas non plus de penser à faire danser son public comme sur le puissant Love Man porté par la batterie à l’uppercut d’Al Jackson et une section de cuivres en feu 100 % Memphis. Enfin, il rappelle qu’il peut aussi être un dieu de la ballade sur I’ve Got Dreams to Remember et ses paroles adaptant un poème de sa femme Zelma. Quant au tubesque (Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay qui ouvre les hostilités, tout le monde sait qu’elle est son ultime chanson enregistrée avant sa mort. Publiée en janvier 1968, le single s’installe à la première place des charts le 16 mars, s’écoule à plus de 4 millions d’exemplaires et sera le premier disque posthume d’un artiste à décrocher une telle pole position… © Max Dembo/Qobuz
