Distorsión, the second full-length album from singer/songwriter Oscar Maydon, doubles down on delivering nontypical trap corridos. Issued by Rancho Humilde, home base for the trap corridos movement, and co-produced by label boss Jimmy Humilde, the record's sound is warm, rounded, and multi-textured; it stands apart sonically from other genre examples. Five of the set's 17 songs are collaborations, including opener "Tipo Gatsby." Maydon and his peers Gabito Ballesteros and Natanael Cano transform into 21st century Mexican Gatsbys, acknowledging their common love of material extravagance and overturning "the American Dream" as balaclava-clad outlaw protagonists celebrating Mexican culture and excess -- material and sexual. "Bien Raro," delivered solely by Maydon, walks the line between corrido, norteño, and mariachi with reverbed brass and reeds slipping around in the mix, appending the attack from acoustic guitars. The single "Kim Kardashian," featuring Tyga, underscores the themes introduced in "Tipo Gatsby" while drawing literal and metaphorical comparisons and equations between her lifestyle and theirs. The use of staggered rhythms, often in double time, accented by a sparse tuba, are quite innovative in Regional Mexican music. The album's title track, with its glorious acoustic guitar and horn syncopation, portrays Maydon's protagonist in as state of struggle, societal chaos, and overwhelming romantic desire. The only place he finds comfort is in his "purple medicine" and his beloved's kiss. "Elvira," with Ballesteros and Chino Pacas, is a classic yet deeply resonant emotional tale of betrayal, deceit, and romantic loss through the now mythical personas of Scarface and Elvira. "Skin de Bandida," featuring Junior H and Ballesteros, juxtaposes themes of decadent material covetousness, warped sexual desire, and the loneliness of Maydon's outlaw modern Gatsby. "Andrea" employs slippery cumbia. Its protagonist addresses an absent beloved who has left him. His apologies, insights, and regrets are consumptive; they blame everything from his lifestyle and friends to his emotional immaturity, to no purpose -- she is still gone. The single "Mexican Flan," featuring Codiciado, offers encounters in personal drama in the everyday life of a young drug trafficker.
Maydon's lyrics are alternately revelatory, incisive, and infuriating. They hover, float, and dig into the dreamy, rhythmically complex mix he and Humilde provide. Horns are not merely harmonic and melodic instruments, they are also employed, more often than not, rhythmically. The layered acoustic guitars and bajo sextos are warm, rounded, reverbed, and sometimes even subtle. They frame Maydon's thin, reedy baritone, adding depth of musical character as well as dimension in underscoring sometimes troubling individual truths. Ultimately, Distorsión stands head and shoulders above 2022's GXLE
