Tout ça, c’est pour de faux, la beauté de l’art dans l’artifice et du culte dans la pop culture. Orville Peck est apparu en 2019 comme dans un rêve agité : un cow-boy queer spectral et néanmoins glamour, le visage caché derrière un masque à franges et prenant des poses à la Elvis dans des costumes avec encore plus de franges. Succès immédiat auprès de ceux qui aiment avoir l’image sans le son. Mais avec le son, c’était bien aussi. Son premier album Pony ressemblait à une compile d’obscures pépites de country sans terroir, terrain de jeu d’un enfant de la new wave découvrant la voix de Roy Orbison et les guitares western. Un fantasme indé très personnel et touchant, transformé aujourd’hui avec un deuxième album aux ambitions beaucoup plus vastes. De Pony à Bronco, Peck assume le changement de monture. Il a enregistré ces nouvelles chansons à Nashville, avec beaucoup plus de musiciens et de moyens, et sans doute moins de liberté. Il plonge tête masquée la première dans le souvenir de la country-pop des années 60, très arrangée et formatée. Assez méconnaissable, son chant rappelle Charlie Rich, Glen Campbell, Elvis ou toujours Roy Orbison. A la limite de l’imitation emphatique, pas très sauvage pour un bronco, Orville Peck risque ici de perdre la frange indé de ses fans, qui regretteront le charme bancal et personnel de son premier album. Pourtant, le disque est joliment arrangé et riche en mélodies, il reste du bon côté de la parodie. On peut très bien se laisser prendre par les sentiments et adorer ces chansons qui évoquent un âge d’or de l’americana, donnent envie de ressortir des vinyles cornés.
