Premier effort studio de l'auteur-compositeur-interprète irlandais Gavin James, Bitter Pill voit le jour un an et demi après sa signature chez Capitol et la livraison de son premier enregistrement en public, Live at Whelans. Ce dernier, proposant les travaux d'un artiste en mode intimiste, seul et armé d'une guitare acoustique, avait su trouver son public, et c'est sans surprise que les mêmes chansons, cette fois arrangées en studio, permettent à James de percer sur le marché international. Le ton n'a rien perdu de sa sincérité et les deux albums s'achèvent sur la même reprise de "The Book of Love" des Magnetic Fields, confirmant le goût de James pour l'approche de Stephin Merritt.
