Leur rencontre à New York était une évidence. A les voir, c’est l’image d’un frère et d’une sœur qui ressort, et pour cause, il est rare d’entendre une fusion si réussie. Les douces mélodies folk d’Hartman et le banjo délicat d’Ashton n’ont jamais fait si bon ménage. Pourtant, ce n’est pas l’expérience qui manque, elle faisant partie du groupe Della Mae et lui des Fish & Bird. Been on Your Side s’inspire d’un folk tradi sans pourtant tomber dans les mélodies vieillottes et poussiéreuses. Relativement printanier et légèrement mélancolique d’un été trop vite passé, Courtney Hartman apporte une fraîcheur féminine que son partenaire suit sans contraintes. Sur une douzaine de titres, c’est l’équilibre le plus parfait qui règne. Rien ne dépasse et les compositions s’enchaînent dans une fluidité remarquable. Chanson légère d’amour non partagé sur Dead to Me, banjo qui teinte le titre Been on Your Side pour s’achever sur la déréliction de Liza : "I know what it means to need a shoulder, so lay your head on mine."
