Coming after a series of singles and remixes, Australian breakbeat duo Lostep's first proper album both consolidates their credentials as IDM purveyors and takes things a bit further. The title track in particular is aggressively odd, its primary beat repeatedly petering out in favor of short blasts of atonal noise. Nothing else on Because We Can is quite so out there, but the album as a whole shifts easily from the relatively straightforward deep house of "6 a.m. Sedna" to the more aggressive breakbeat track "Villain," with stops in between at the mellow, hypnotic groove of "Theme from a Fairytale" and the odd, staggered beats of "Dr. King's Surgery." Impressively varied and wide-ranging, Because We Can is the aptly titled work of a duo who clearly isn't interested in sticking to one particular sound.
