Banyan's eponymous debut suffers from the same problem as many self-consciously "experimental" side projects -- it is rarely intriguing and consistently self-indulgent. Stephen Perkins and David Turin -- with the help of engineers the Dust Brothers, Mike Watt, Nels Cline and the Freeway Keyboardist -- do come up with a handful of provocative sounds, but never turn them into either compositions or effective soundscapes. Instead, it's a dull mess of samples, loops, found sounds, and noodling instrumentals that doesn't say much of anything.
