Après avoir voyagé dans l’atmosphère et offert des ambiances vaporeuses et spirituelles sur ses précédents projets, l’Australienne Sampa The Great revient avec un album beaucoup plus terre à terre, As Above, So Below, mais peut-être plus profond. Originaire de Zambie, ayant grandi au Botswana, la rappeuse/chanteuse semble ici renouer plus radicalement avec ses racines africaines. Elle les mobilise musicalement sans les considérer comme des influences, plutôt comme l’un des nombreux outils artistiques à sa disposition. Les titres Imposter Syndrome ou l’excellent Tilibobo, imprégné des textures amapiano sud-africaines, en sont les preuves. Mais le rap n’est jamais loin. Sampa The Great s’offre le luxe d’inviter deux rappeurs américains qui ont chacun sorti un album phare de l’année 2022 : Denzel Curry et Joey Bada$$. Elle montre sa maîtrise des flows sudistes sur IDGAF en featuring avec Kojey Radical, et convie également la chanteuse franco-béninoise Angélique Kidjo sur la clôture de l’album, Let Me Be Great.
