Après un premier album, High Expectations, paru en 2019, qui avait déjà fortement séduit le Royaume-Uni par sa fraîcheur et sa vitalité, son successeur About Last Night… confirme le potentiel de Mabel, la fille de Neneh Cherry. Né de la frustration engendrée par la période de confinement imposée par la Covid-19, ce deuxième album réclame à grands cris sa part de joie de vivre et son besoin de profiter de la nuit et de l’exaltation de la danse. Au travers de titres comme « Let Them Know », « Animal » ou « Definition », Mabel a défini sa playlist idéale pour une soirée délurée. Bien épaulée par des spécialistes du genre comme Jax Jones et Galantis (sur « Good Luck »), elle crée des rythmiques entêtantes irriguées par un mélange de dance, de house et de R&B, tout en incorporant quelques réminiscences disco dans l’air du temps. La lauréate du Brit Award de la meilleure chanteuse britannique réussit haut la main l’épreuve de la confirmation avec un disque sans prise de risque mais hautement jubilatoire.
