Contemporain de Gluck, le compositeur maltais Girolamo Abos (1715 – 1760) passa le plus clair de sa carrière à Naples ; l’on ne s’étonnera donc pas que son style trahisse l’évidente influence de ce grand centre musical européen du XVIIIe siècle, transmise par ses maîtres Leonardo Leo et Francesco Durante. Abos passa quand même deux ans au Théâtre Italien de Londres mais sans doute la météo locale ne lui convint-elle guère… Outre une douzaine d’opéras, on lui doit une belle collection d’œuvres sacrées, écrites pour la plupart après son retour de Londres en 1758 – son ultime maturité donc puisqu’il devait s’éteindre deux ans plus tard. Voilà un fort digne compositeur, dont ces trois grands ouvrages sont défendus avec brio par la Kölner Academie, un ensemble qui se fait fort de ressusciter bien des splendeurs oubliées des temps passés. © SM/Qobuz
