Un peu plus d’un mois après la sortie de son troisième album éponyme, Aaliyah périssait à 22 ans dans un crash d’avion à l’instar de neuf autres personnes. L’onde de choc et de tristesse n’a fait que renforcer l’impact de ce disque sorti le 17 juillet 2001, emmené par les productions électroniques savantes et grandiloquentes de son producteur-mentor Timbaland. De cette collaboration sont nées les intemporels cartons More Than A Woman, We Need A Resolution ou encore Try Again. Mais il serait injuste de limiter ce disque à ces quelques coups de forces, aussi superbes soient-ils. D’autres producteurs comme Key Beats, Bud’da, Eric Seats et J-Dub sont les architectes de ce classique du RnB de l’époque. C’est d’ailleurs ce dernier qui commet l’instru du titre I Refuse, single un peu oublié au fil du temps, qui détone par sa gravité et sa tension. La voix d’Aaliyah est sublimée sur Rock The Boat, faite d’harmonies complexes et superbement mixées dans la lignée de Mariah Carey ou de Brandy. C’est en se rendant sur le tournage du clip de ce morceau, le 25 août 2001 à Marsh Harbour aux Bahamas, que la chanteuse a trouvé la mort. Il est pourtant bardé d’optimisme, de sensualité, d’arrangements synthétiques précieux, et symbolise la soif de recherche musicale de sa protagoniste. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
