Miranda Cuckson
Violinist Miranda Cuckson focuses on contemporary music and has had music written for her by an unusually wide range of composers, from Philip Glass to Luigi Nono. She is also a significant educator.
Cuckson (pronounced "Cookson") was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1972 but grew up in the U.S. and has lived for most of her life in that country. She entered a youth program at the Juilliard School in New York at the age of nine and stayed at Juilliard through bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. Among her teachers were Robert Mann, Dorothy DeLay, Felix Galimir, and the Juilliard Quartet. She also plays the viola. Cuckson received her doctorate in 2003 after writing a dissertation on composer Ross Lee Finney; that thesis won the school's Richard French Prize. By that time, Cuckson had already begun her recording career, issuing a recording of violin concertos by Manuel Ponce and Erich Wolfgang Korngold with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra on the Centaur label.
Cuckson's repertory includes works of all periods, but she has emphasized contemporary music in her performances and recordings. She has appeared at major halls in the U.S. and Europe, including Carnegie Hall (where she performed Walter Piston's Violin Concerto No. 1 with the American Symphony Orchestra), the Philharmonie in Berlin, and Suntory Hall in Tokyo, as well as festivals and smaller venues such as the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. Cuckson has worked with composers in many contemporary music styles, from minimalism (Glass) to European experimentalism (Nono), as well as Finney, Aaron Jay Kernis, Huang Ruo, and many others. She has recorded for Orange Mountain Music, ECM, and Urlicht, among other labels, issuing the solo violin recital Világ on the latter in 2023. By that time, her recording catalog comprised nearly 20 albums. Cuckson teaches violin and chamber music at the Mannes School of Music at New School University in New York.
