MICHAEL MASON

Michael Mason is a Chicago-based flutist, composer, author, recording artist, and arranger. He is well-versed in jazz tradition from swing and hard bop to the vanguard as well as in prog-rock, world music, and other styles. Despite technical sophistication, Mason offers raw immediacy in his tone and phrasing, balancing emotion with intellect. Over the decades, he has worked extensively with musicians ranging across the Windy City scene, from members of the AACM to Ernest Dawkins to Kahil El'Zabar. Deluge, Mason's 1995 debut, was performed by an octet. Nine months later, Visionary offered tribute to John Coltrane's Atlantic years. 1997's Exploration roved across jazz and Caribbean styles, and 2001's Angels of Fire offered an arresting, resonant meditation on 1958's Our Lady of Angels school fire in Chicago (it killed 92 children and three nuns). Mason was a first grader there at the time, and the tragedy left a lifelong mark on the musician. He became a fireman and served as a lieutenant in Downer's Grove for more than 30 years. During his tenure, he also served as a teaching consultant on the set of the NBC drama Chicago Fire and on the set of the Batman v Superman film shot there. Following 2004's Signal, Mason took a 16-year break from recording. He taught workshops and worked live and in his vocation as a fireman. He returned in 2021, after signing with Audio & Video Labs Inc., with Human Revolution. It showcased a seamless, masterful integration of bracing modern jazz, Eastern modalism, and world fusion. 2022's Transcendence followed suit, and in 2023, Mason released Impermanence, a speculative yet fully articulated global vision for contemporary jazz.
