Mariano Barba

Mariano Barba is an award-winning singer/songwriter and producer of Mexican Regional Music. His throaty baritone and clever charts and arrangements have attracted large audiences across Latin America. While his debut long-player Me Gusta La Banda introduced him to Mexican radio in 2002, it was 2005's Una Noche Mas Contigo that broke through and took home a silver certification. His follow-up single, 2006's "Aliado del Tiempo," spent six weeks inside the Top Ten and took home a Billboard Music Award for Latin Song of the Year in 2007 on its way to gold certification. Subsequent outings including 2008's Nuestro Punto G and 2010's Sigo Siendo el Primero established him at radio internationally, while Aqui Estoy featured originals alongside covers of popular and traditional standards. 2013's Con Amor Para Mi Gente focused on love songs. In 2016, his catalog was remastered and digitally reissued while he recorded 2017's Nuestro Amor en Secreto. Nunca Voy a Olvidarte appeared in 2020. Barba was born Francisco Méndez Barba in Tepatitlán, Jalisco. By age eight, he was already obsessed with music thanks to his parents' record collection comprised almost entirely of traditional Mexican music including ranchera, mariachi, grupero, Duranguense, and of course, banda. He began teaching himself to play the guitar from those recordings. By the time he entered high school, Barba had become a masterful technician on the guitar and was writing his own songs. After graduating, he dove headlong into making music, playing his own songs in cantinas, restaurants, and truck stops. His independently issued debut single "El Mono de Alambre" in 2002 won him some regional radio play. While his debut long-player, Me Gusta La Banda, didn't sell very well, it got attention from DJs and radio programmers attracted to its meld of old and new sounds and won him a record deal with Three Sound Records who were drawn to his passionate singing, clever songwriting, and the unequivocal support he received from radio DJs. The label issued and properly promoted his sophomore outing, 2003's De Parranda Con.... It registered his own songs against classic cover material, and did far better that its predecessor, exceeding all the label's sales expectations. Barba toured the region and issued his third long-player, Una Noche Mas Contigo, and it broke through; the record achieved a silver certification with over 10,000 units sold and got airplay from Tijuana to Mexico City. His success led to his 2006 single "Aliado del Tiempo," which was a straight out of the box. It peaked at six, spent six weeks at Top Ten on the Mexican Regional Songs chart, and was certified gold. It paved the way for the album of the same name to earn airplay across Latin and North America. While the single and album won Latin Song of the Year and Best Regional Mexican Album at the 2007 Billboard Music Awards, it only made sense that he was awarded Male Artist of the Year as well. In addition, Barba took home Premio Nuestro, Equinox, and Ke Buena awards. His tour sold out venues across Mexico, Los Angeles, New York City, and Texas, and was documented on that year's En Vivo, which peaked at number three on the Mexican Regional albums chart. 2008's Nuestro Punto G cemented Barba's reputation as one of Mexico's finest crooners and hottest "new" artists; it won airplay across the Caribbean and South America, establishing Barba as an international star, and expanded his touring opportunities exponentially. A focused collection of banda and ranchera love songs entitled Sigo Siendo el Primero was issued in 2011. While it didn't set the charts on fire, it did well at radio and its title track single made the download charts (The album has since become one of Barba's most successful streaming titles.) The artist recorded Aqui Estoy, a one-off for Skalona, in 2011. Several of its tracks were recut for 2013's love song collection, Con Amor Para Mi Gente. Barba worked the road, but his past and current labels issued several compilations including Corazon Ranchero, 21 Los Exitos de Mariano Barba, and Exitos de Mariano Barba. In January of 2016, Barba and new label ROHI released the acclaimed, charting studio album Un Exit os con Alma de Triunfador, and remastered reissues of his catalog to streaming, followed by a national tour. Nuestro Amor en Secreto and Inevitable both followed in 2017 with an international tour between them. 2020 offered the critically acclaimed traditional and stripped-down Guerrero de Poder -- only his guitar and a tuba were utilized for accompaniment. Traigo Ganas, a collection of full band originals, had expansive arrangements and mixed tempos. He also released the genre-bending Estoy Feo Pero Estoy de Moda EP, that included uptempo banda hybrid tunes such as "Rock and Roll Ranchero" and "Con Whisky."
