Jane Getter

Jane Getter is a New York-based guitarist, composer, singer, and bandleader. She has carved out a musical niche at the intersection of jazz, metal, prog rock, and singer/songwriter styles with sophisticated compositions and a playing style she once described as "Mahavishnu Orchestra-meets-Led Zeppelin-meets-King Crimson." During her professional career she has worked with a who's-who of top-flight musicians, playing everything from fusion and pop-jazz to straight-ahead, post- and hard bop, funk and R&B, metal, hard rock, and prog. Since earning her bones touring with soul-jazz organ king Jack McDuff, she has become a first-call session and performing guitarist. She has released a select and acclaimed body of recordings under her own name beginning with 1999's Jane for Germany's Lipstick label. She is also a core member of her keyboardist, composer, and producer husband Adam Holzman's bands, and was a core member of Michael Urbaniak's Urbanator and the Saturday Night Live Band for several years. Her sophomore offering, 2007's See Jane Run, received laudatory reviews, while 2011's Three won her featured performing slots on rock and jazz festival stages across the globe. She formed the Jane Getter Premonition in 2014 and released On the following year to mass acclaim. The JGP's On Tour was released in 2017. After working with Holzman and others on the road and in-studio for several years, she released JGP's Anomalia in 2021. The Jane Getter Premonition issued Division World, its third album, in February 2024. Getter is originally from New Jersey and began playing the guitar at age eight. During high school she was inclined toward jazz, fusion, and progressive rock and cited her major influences as Jeff Beck, Allan Holdsworth, and Wes Montgomery. Upon graduation from high school she moved to the Bay Area to attend San Francisco State University but ended up returning to the East Coast and making New York her home. She sat in with musicians, made their acquaintance, and developed her chops. Her first professional recognition arrived when she won a spot as soul-jazz organ legend Jack McDuff's touring guitarist during the '80s. After leaving his employ, Getter made it clear on club stages and in studios that she was comfortable in most settings, playing fusion one minute, straight-ahead jazz the next, and funk, post-punk, and metal after that. She studied privately with John Scofield, Jack Wilkins, and Chuck Loeb, and worked with artists who included violinist Regina Carter, saxophonist Joe Lovano, and pianist Kenny Barron. During the '90s, Getter led her own fusion/crossover band that included electric bassist Victor Bailey, Holzman, and drummer Rodney Holmes. Her debut album, Jane, was issued by Germany's Lipstick label in 1999. After playing her own national and international support tours, Getter found work with drummer Lenny White, singer Urszula Dudziak, saxophonist Kenny Garrett, drummer Mike Clark (Headhunters), Adam Holzman & Brave New World, and the Saturday Night Live Band. She also served as a featured guest at several of the organized, yet informal jam sessions put on by the Roots. Getter issued her follow-up, See Jane Run, for Alternity in 2005. Her lineup included Holzman as producer and keyboardist, bassist James Genus, drummer Keith Carlock (Steely Dan), and vocalist Thulani Jeffries (United Funk Order). She took a trio on a tour of the U.S., Europe, and Asia. In 2006, in addition to touring, she and White contributed the track "Door #3" to Larry Coryell's Traffic. In 2009 she cut a guitar duet project entitled Secret Code with Bruce Arnold for Muse-Eek Records, and in 2010 worked in Germany on singer and songwriter Twana Rhodes' Home: The U.F.O. Sessions. A year later she was the featured guitarist on saxophonist Laura Dreyer's Free Flying Bird. In 2012 Getter released her third studio date, simply titled Three. In addition to her own guitars, vocals, and tunes, the lineup included Holzman, Genus, drummer Anton Fig, and a guest vocal spot from Jimmy Gnecco on the track "Too Much Fear." Though she toured to support the record, she was also busy putting together her prog/jazz fusion outfit the Jane Getter Premonition. The band's debut On appeared in 2015. Getter's lineup was composed of all-stars including bassist Bryan Beller, drummer Chad Wackerman, guitarist Alex Skolnick, Holzman, and saxophonist/flutist Theo Travis. Former Living Colour singer Corey Glover also contributed to three key tracks. The set received glowing reviews for its seamless and energetic meld of prog, rock, metal, angular fusion, and its incomparably original lyricism. Getter's band toured for more than a year. Given her musicians' fluctuating schedules, she recruited alternates including bassists Mark Egan and Stu Hamm, drummer John Mader, percussionist Mino Cinelu, and vocalist Chanda Rule. The Jane Getter Premonition released On Tour in 2017 to her best reviews yet. The Premonition solidified its lineup on the road over the next two years. Getter and Holzman re-entered the studio and emerged with Anomalia in March of 2021. The lineup solidified to include Hamm and Egan as alternating bassists, and Wackerman and Gene Lake as its drummers. Vocalist Randy McStine guested on the track "Alien Refugee" and Vernon Reid added his guitar to Skolnick's and Getter's on "Dissembler." The lineup solidified on 2024's Division World even as the musical focus shifted. Paul Frazier came aboard as the band's permanent bassist and its backing vocalist. Getter chose to concentrate on songwriting and vocals more than ever before; she included only one instrumental on the 11-song set. Prog guitarist Randy McStine (aka LoFi Resistance) guested as a vocalist on set-closer "Waiting for the Light."
