INJI

An artist equally comfortable singing a catchy melody and delivering a sardonic monologue over pulsing electronic beats, INJI caught the ear of online scrollers in 2022 with the self-released singles “Gaslight” and “Madeline.” The worldly performer -- born and raised in Europe before settling into America as a college student -- parlayed that viral fame into a major-label deal with Polydor, which issued her debut EP LFG in 2023. Born Inci Gürün in Istanbul the granddaughter of a tugboat magnate and occasional guitarist, she received a considerable music education as a child: she studied classical piano at Istanbul University State Conservatory, toured competitively through Europe, and performed with jazz bands while attending high school in London. She then moved to Philadelphia, attending the prestigious Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Though Gürün continued to dabble in jazz while studying there, it was a seemingly one-off track put together in a dorm with some friends that became her calling card. “Gaslight,” INJI's debut single, was released in 2022. She effortlessly switched between a versatile croon and laconic drawls on the track, berating a toxic man as synths bubbled and strutted in the background. A clip of her putting the song together with producer Alex Graf went viral and stoked fans’ interest in hearing the full version on streaming services. The follow-up “Madeline,” about a wayward night at the club, was played with the same sonic palette and earned similar notice later that year; this time, however, it had the support of Polydor, which would issue her debut EP LFG in 2023. More highly streamed singles followed: 2023’s “Bellydancing,” featuring mariachi-style horns in addition to its electronic beats, and the hyperpop-adjacent “Hate Your Guts,” released in 2024.
