Cash
Cleveland-based Cash consisted of fraternal twins Danny and Dennis Roberson, and Jimmy Fleming. They formed in 1974; previously, the Robersons' sang with Earl Gaye & and the Imaginations, a popular local act who waxed a few 45s. Cash released their first single "You Don't Want My Love," in 1978, followed by "I Love You Still," on Greedy Records, and "Hot Thing" and "I Wanna Be Loved by You" on the Casbar label. On their first gig, they opened for the Spinners in Warren, OH. They also opened for the Temptations, Blue Magic, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Al Hudson & the Soul Partners, Curtis Mayfield, the Dells, War, the Moments, Stevie Wonder, the Sylvers, and a list of others. Memorable gigs include performances at the Apollo Theater in New York, and for Jesse Jackson's Operation Breadbasket in Chi-town. They raised eyebrows opening for B.B. King at Cleveland's celebrated but now defunct, Front Row Theater in Mayfield Heights, OH in 1985. Cash opened the show with an a cappella rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner," receiving a standing ovation for their excellent execution and beautiful harmonies. Performing with a five-piece band, they did two originals, and closed to thunderous applause with Cameo's "Single Life." Right On magazine did a piece on Cash. An appearance on Soul Train attracted national attention. Unfortunately, they never received the stroke of luck, or the right timing, to put them over the top, and the exciting teens never obtained the level of success projected for them. Dennis Roberson-Cash currently manages urban soul crooners Smooth Approach, a group that includes his younger brother Jeff "Tight" Roberson, who played drums for Cash at the age of nine.
