Artemis

Named after the Greek goddess of hunting, Artemis is an all-women jazz collective known for their deeply sophisticated and adroit post-bop jazz. The group debuted in 2020 with the eponymously titled Artemis, followed in 2023 by In Real Time. Formed in 2017, Artemis is led by pianist and musical director Renee Rosnes, and originally featured tenor trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, saxophonist Melissa Aldana, clarinetist Anat Cohen, bassist Noriko Ueda, drummer Allison Miller, and vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant. Rosnes initially assembled the group for a European tour, hoping to showcase and build upon the talents of each musician. Following well-received live shows at Carnegie Hall and the 2018 Newport Jazz Festival, the band released their debut album, Artemis, on Blue Note Records. In 2023, Artemis returned with their sophomore album, In Real Time. It found the core lineup of Rosnes, Jensen, Ueda, and Miller joined by tenor saxophonist Nicole Grover and multi-reedist Alexa Tarantino. Along with more original compositions, the album included the group's take on the classic Wayne Shorter piece "Penelope."
