He is one of the main actors in the worldwide revival of 17th and 18th century music that has been taking place over the last fifty years. Small numbers, ancient or replicated instruments, research into articulations and modes of playing studied in the performance treatises of the eras in question, such are the concerns of historicist musicians. John Eliot Gardiner founded the Monteverdi Choir in 1964. He was just 20 years old at the time and had just finished studying history and Arabic at King's College, Cambridge. At the same time he had been working on music with Thurston Dart, one of the pioneers of early modern music study in England, and had spent two years in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, which made him a well-informed Francophone, and Francophile. In 1967, his first breakthrough came from conducting the Vespers of the Virgin in his own fashion, based on historical texts. With his growing success he added an instrumental ensemble to the original choir and began to explore a wide repertoire, including Rameau, Bach and Handel, before moving on to Mozart and Beethoven. In 1982, he conducted the world premiere of Les Boréades in Aix-en-Provence, the last opera by Jean-Philippe Rameau, whose rehearsals had been interrupted by the composer's death in 1764. Its success was immense as the musical world discovered a masterpiece of modernism and invention within it. Gardiner remained attached to France, where he would stay on for several years as the musical director of the Lyon Opera, conducting memorable performances that mixed Mozart with Chabrier. In 1993, the English conductor directed another premiere of a forgotten masterpiece, Berlioz's Messe solennelle, thought to have been destroyed by the composer. Gardiner then established a new ensemble, the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, which allowed him to embark on a different repertoire, recording a sensational complete recording of Beethoven's symphonies that radically changed people’s listening habits. On the eve of the year 2000, he conducted and recorded the complete religious cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of his death. This was a unique recording project, first produced by DG and then by Gardiner's own label, Soli Deo Gloria, in honour of Bach's motto. Each cantata was recorded in concerts throughout Europe with today's finest singers. The complete set comprises 57 CDs, but Gardiner did not stop there. On top of this musical trove, he has published a 700-page book devoted to the Cantor, under the title Musique au château du ciel in its French edition. His love for Monteverdi is as strong as ever, as Gardiner organised a world tour in 2017 with the famous Monteverdian trilogy, Orfeo, The Return of Ulysses and The Coronation of Poppea, to mark the 450th anniversary of the composer's death.
