About Playlist
One of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, George Szell (György Széll) was one of the great diaspora of Hungarian leaders who fled Europe on the rise of Nazism. The war having surprised him while returning from a tour in Australia while passing by the United States, he settled with his family in New York beginning, like many European exiles, to teach. But George Szell was not a stranger. After working extensively in Berlin, where he had succeeded Otto Klemperer), Prague and Düsseldorf, he made his US debut with the Saint-Louis Symphony Orchestra in the 1930s.
The art of George Szell was based on a perfect knowledge of the scores in every detail and a search for phrasing, transparency and balance of architecture. He also insisted at length on the rhythmic precision and took care to explain at length what he wanted. If his demands were extreme, he also knew how to express his joy when a passage was in keeping with the ideal he had in mind. In telling a reporter that he did not want to "pour chocolate sauce over asparagus", he showed how "great art was an enemy of disorder".
George Szell's repertoire was mainly based on nineteenth-century Austro-Hungarian music, but also on Haydn and Mozart, which he was happy to conduct. He did not neglect his contemporaries, playing composers like Dutilleux, Walton, Prokofiev, Hindemith and Bartok. He also initiated the rich collaboration of Pierre Boulez with the Cleveland Orchestra and also collaborated with a small number of orchestras in New York, Amsterdam and Vienna, with whom he recorded some records. Excellent pianist, George Szell left some records of Mozart's chamber music. © François Hudry / QOBUZ / June 2018
