About Playlist
To celebrate to recent release of his solo album “A Quickening” on Play It Again Sam, ex-Maccabees frontman Orlando Weeks has curated for Qobuz an exclusive playlist made up of tracks that influenced the making of his record.
Low - Always Trying to Work it Out -
For hiding a beautiful song within a different sort of beautiful song.
Julia Holter - I Shall Love 2 -
I like the brazen hi hat sample that sits there throughout and makes the juicy tambourine hits all the more juicy.
The Durutti Column - Otis -
For being joyfull and tragic. For some reason it makes me think of Mike Leigh films like Mean Time.
Arthur Russel - This is How We Walk on the Moon -
The first Russel song I heard and still my favourite. Eversince and always an influence.
Capitol K - Island Is Ransacked -
I love the loop and the woodwind. From a record called Goatherder and this always makes me think of the goat hooves. The song ends badly for the goats.
Daniel Blumberg - Minus -
Beautiful sounding piano and beautiful playing. This record has so much patience.
Harry Nilsson - Over The rainbow -
For some reason this is the version that floors me. It convinced me singing about rainbows isn't inherently mawkish.
Marilyn - Mount Kimbe & Micachu -
I love the whole Love What Survives. This song combines two brilliant artists that were influences on A Quickening.
PJ Harvey - The Glorious Land -
One of the GREAT albums. A huge influence on the record.
Robert Wyatt - At Last I am Free -
I had a song on the album called Perfect Freedom. It should really have been o the record ... it was a sort of response to this song.
The Magnolia Electric Co. - farewell transmission -
For the imagery that this song conjures.
Smog - Easily Led -
I think of this song as the piano and the vocal telling different sides of the same story. And for the lyric - "I lay open jelly limbed to your smallest whim."
Paul Buchanan - Mid Air -
For the sound and sparseness of the piano playing. And for it's sense of homage.
Nick Drake - River man -
For so many reasons this is an influence. But for the sake of keeping things ticking along ... the elongating of words just further than what feels natural.
The Modern Lovers - Dance with me -
It's funny how you can take a song written way before you were born and decide that song was written for and about your situation. Not only that you can willfully ignore the parts of the song that don't fit your appropriation of it.
Love - Old Man -
I love the fearlessness of the deftly played percussion track ... just distant training it through the whole song.
Idles - Heel -
I used to listen to this record as my train from the south coast pulled in to St Pancras station ... I would put my headphones on and play this album super loud. We moved back to London once we knew we were expecting our son.
Gwilym Gold - Breath alone -
This comes from a beautiful record. I remember going to see him play a show somewhere in Ladbroke Grove and watching him play and beginning to imagine the songs I was writing being played live.
Flaming Lips - Always there in our hearts -
So much harder and more ominous than the throbs that we tried to build ... but still ... an influence.
David Crosby - I'd swear there was someone here -
The title alone has relevance to the record's themes. There are songs that didn't make the record that feel very influenced by the sound of the vocals in this one. But even those songs that didn't make the final record all play their part in shaping the record.
Clogs - the owl of love -
Moon's Opera worships at the altar of this song.
